Hi badger! This is a great question and you bring up a few good points. First, the weather is finally improving, at least here in the northeast. For me, getting outside is motivating. I had all winter to use the treadmill & trainer, but rarely used the opportunity. On the other hand, if running on outside surfaces is unforgiving, then by all means, use the treadmill to get your workouts in.
Running outdoors will let your body adapt to all the little things that you'll need to be able to do during a race (dealing with road crowns, uneven surfaces, potholes, etc), but it's more important to get in the appropriate training to build your fitness & prevent injury.
if the treadmill is workign for you, keep at it, but try to do at least one run a week on an outdoor forgiving surface like a jogging trail or dirt path.
